GYNAECOMASTIA


Overview

Gynaecomastia is enlargement of breast in men.  It presents as swelling of the breast, sometimes accompanied by pain and tenderness in the breast. The enlarged breast in gynaecomastia consists of two components: 1) breast tissue and 2) fatty tissue.

There are many causes of gynaecomastia, which include:

1.     The commonest cause is hormonal imbalance that occurs during puberty.

2.   Certain types of medicine such as anti-androgens, anabolic steroids, diazepam, cimetidine, digoxin also can lead to gynaecomastia.

3.     Health conditions such as liver problem, malnutrition, hypogonadism etc.

4.     Overconsumption of alcohol

5.     Certain herb and supplements which ingredients have estrogenic activity.


Gynaecomastia by itself has no serious health complications. However it can cause severe psychological and emotional distress to the patient because of its appearance. Gynaecomastia cause great embarrassment to many male patients


 


Objective

To remove the enlarged breast tissue and fatty tissue in order to restore the normal appearance of a male chest.



Preparation

1.     Treat and stabilize all existing medical conditions, if there is any.

2.     Stop smoking at least one week before surgery

3.     Stop the following AT LEAST ONE WEEK before surgery

a. Supplements contain vitamin E, ginseng, ginko, garlic, fish oil and other ingredients that encourage bleeding during surgery

b.  Medicine that exacerbate bleeding such as aspirin, NSAIDs and warfarin. You may need to consult the physician who prescribed the medicine before stopping them.

 


Surgery

Operation Time: 1-2 hours

Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia as an option.

Go Home: same day

Recovery:  3-5 days

Surgery Method: liposuction or excision or combination of both

1.   Liposuction: small incisions (around 3mm) are made on the lower chest to inserted liposuction cannula. Liposuction of the breast is  performed.

2.   Excision: incision made around the lower half of the nipple areola. Breast tissue and fat are excised and removed.



 


 

Post-Operative Care

-Special supportive garment for at least one month to prevent the skin becomes saggy.

-Take the antibiotics and apply antibiotic ointment as prescribed

-Refrain from smoking during the recovery period in order to optimize wound healing

-If there is heavy bleeding, rapid increase in swelling or severe pain, immediately contact the clinic/ doctor for advice.
