Lateral canthoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to extend the outer corner of the eye. The effect is to make the outer corner of the eye appears sharper and increase the overall horizontal length of the eye.

Preoperative Preparation

• Treat and stabilize all existing medical conditions, if any.
• Stop smoking at least one week before surgery
• Stop the following one week before surgery:
  - All supplements that contain vitamin E, ginseng, ginko, garlic, fish oil and other ingredients that encourage bleeding during surgery
  - Medicine that exacerbate bleeding during operation such as aspirin, NSAIDs and warfarin. You may need to consult the physician who prescribed the medicine before stopping them.
• Bring a pair of sunglasses on the day of surgery
• Don’t wear contact lens and jewelry on the day of surgery

Duration: 0.5 hour
Anaesthesia: Local Anaesthesia
When to Go Home after Surgery: On the same day
Recovery Time: 3-5 days
Technique: Small incisions are made around the outer corner of the eye. The outer corner is then extended laterally and fixed with suture

Recovery

• Minimal swelling is expected around the inner corner of the eye for 3-5 days
• Wound dressing is not required. Clean the wound with clean cotton tip soaked with sterile water or saline
• Antibiotic ointment applied onto the wound with cotton tip three times a day
• Finish the antibiotics given
• Sutures are removed after 5-7 days
• Regular follow-ups to monitor the progress of the patient
