Duration of Surgery: 0.5 hour for stitch method; 1-2 hours for incision method

Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia

When to Go Home after Surgery: On the same day

Back to Work: 5-7 days
Technique: There are two types of double eyelid surgery:

  • Stitch method: Sutures are inserted into the skin of the upper eyelid to create a double eyelid fold. No skin incision. Suitable for patients with thin upper eyelid skin. There is a low but definite possibility that the sutures become loose and the double eyelid folds gradually disappear. This is more likely if the upper eyelid skin is thick.
  •  Incision method: An incision is made on the upper eyelid skin. The eyelid is opened and tissue fixation is done to create the double eyelid fold. The results from the incision method are permanent. The scar on the upper eyelid usually heals very well and usually not noticeable at normal talking distance.

  • Swelling peaks on the second and third day after operation and will gradually sudside thereafter
  • Patient can read and do light daily activity at home the first week
  • No dressing is required. Clean the wound with clean cotton tip soaked with sterile water or saline
  • Apply antibiotic ointment onto the wound with cotton tip three times a day
  • Finish the oral antibiotics prescribed
  • To reduce swelling, apply cold pack on the wound for the first 3 days and warm pack after 3 days
  • Use sunglasses when going outdoor
  • Elevate the head while sleeping to reduce swelling
  • Avoid contact lens for 2 weeks
  • Avoid heavy excise for at least 2 weeks
  • Sutures are removed after 5-7 days
  • If there is heavy bleeding, rapid increase in swelling or severe pain, immediately contact the clinic/ doctor and come back for review
