BROW LIFT

Overview

Signs of aging in the forehead include presence of horizontal forehead creases, sagging of brows, hooding of upper eyelid and frown lines. These signs make the patient appears old, tired and even angry. Brow lift is a surgical procedure specially designed to address these problem and rejuvenate the forehead and brow.

To provide more comprehensive results of facial rejuvenation, brow lift can be combined with other surgical procedure such as facelift and upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Objectives

• To elevate the sagging eyebrows
• To reduce hooding of the upper eyelids
• To tighten the forehead skin and eliminate the horizontal creases of the forehead
• To remove the vertical skin creases between eyebrows (frown lines)

Preoperative Preparation

• Treat and stabilize all existing medical conditions, if any
• Stop smoking at least one week before surgery
• Stop one week before surgery
  - All supplements that contain vitamin E, ginseng, ginko, garlic, fish oil and other ingredients that encourage bleeding during surgery
  - Medicine that exacerbate bleeding during operation such as aspirin, NSAIDs and warfarin. Consult the physician who prescribed the medicine. 

Surgery

Duration: 2-3 hours
Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia
When to Go Home after Surgery: Usually on the same day, or one overnight stay in hospital
Recovery Time: 1 week
Technique:

1. Endoscopic Brow Lift: 3-5 small incisions made just behind the hairline. An endoscope is inserted to visualize the interior structures. Skin and muscle attachments are freed and repositioned to a more youthful position. The elevated skin is then fixed into position with Endotine devices.

2. Temporal Brow Lift: Small incisions are made behind the hairline in the temples. Skin is lifted and tightened to provide lifting to the lateral brow and adjacent upper eyelid.

Recovery

• Swelling and bruises will gradually subside in around 1-2 weeks
• Apply ice pack on the wound for the first 3 days to reduce swelling
• Apply warm pack on the wound after 3 days to facilitate resolution of swelling
• After shower dry the wound by gently applying clean cotton. Reapply antibiotic ointment
• Elevate the head while sleeping to reduce swelling
• Finish the oral antibiotic prescribed
• Avoid heavy excise for at least 2 weeks
• Sutures are removed after 7 days
• Some degree of numbness of the scalp skin may be present for several weeks
• Scars after brow lift surgery are hidden within the hairline
