DERMAL FILLERS

DERMAL FILLERS

Overview
alt
Dermal fillers represent a wide spectrum of medical products that are injected into the skin to enhance the volume of the skin and soft tissue beneath the skin. Dermal fillers have become an important non-surgical treatment for facial rejuvenation especially for those in the early stages of facial aging. Currently there are a wide variety of dermal fillers that are being used. Some common examples are:
  1. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers. Currently the most popular type of fillers. Results last from a few months to one to two years, depending on the composition and molecular cross-linkage of the particular product used. Many products also have lidocaine inside to reduce pain sensation during injection. Examples are Juvederm and Teosyal
  2. Calcium Hydroxylapatite Filler (Radiesse). Heavier and larger molecules provide longer-lasting results. Can be used to augment the nose and chin.
  3. Fat Graft. Lost volume in the face can be replaced by fat harvested from other parts of the body. (refer to the section of Fat Transfer)

Applications
alt
  1. Some wrinkles and lines on the face are caused by loss of volume in the skin. Examples are the lines at the side of the nose (nasolabial folds), the line at the corner of the mouth (marionette line) and the hollow beneath the eyebag (tear trough). Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to add volume and emolliate these wrinkles and lines.
  2. Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical method to augment the nose and chin.
  3. Dermal fillers can be used to fill up the hollowness of the cheek and temple, as well as create a gentle roundness in an otherwise flat forehead.
